In 1993 the ASO (NSW) Branch created a charitable trust with the purpose of funding a Chair in Orthodontics at The University of Sydney and supporting the funding of academic staff in NSW and the ACT.
The original fund was seeded by the donation at the time of $10,000 from each ASO Orthodontist in NSW and the ACT. As a result of the fund, the Chair in Orthodontics was created in 1995 and continues to underpin orthodontic education and research as well as provide a valuable source of care for the disadvantaged children of NSW.
The fund has been supported since inception through the generous corporate support of Henry Schein Halas, the previous support of Colgate-Palmolive and Denticare, and voluntary donations by the majority of NSW and ACT members through the Case for the Future Program.
The Case for the Future Program started in the mid-1990’s as an annual member’s donation of $1,000 that was equivalent to the yearly cost/profit of a two year case at the time - today this would be equivalent to $2000. The amount has remained unchanged since then, but we are now providing members with options enabling them to be more generous with donations, so it can truly be a donation of a case for the future! We have also provided quarterly or bi-annual options for the $1000 amount to make it easier for members to donate.
As of January 2021 the Trust has donated more than $3.25 million to orthodontic education. In 2013 it was inducted into The University of Sydney’s prestigious ‘Founders Circle’ in recognition of its long and generous support for education.
The future of orthodontic education is in your hands. Please help us to ensure that future generations of orthodontists receive the best possible training.
