ASO Membership Application

Notes for the guidance of applicants

Detailed instructions are included on the application form.

Please follow these instructions carefully and ask your State Federal Councillor or State Secretary to assist you should the need arise.

The application process takes some time because of the multiple stages involved.  Therefore, it is essential that the applicant provides all essential material and the necessary detail in the first instance. If the information supplied is incomplete, the application might be returned for revision.

Referees nominated by the applicant may be requested to forward a report in support of the application.

All applications must be accompanied be the fee appropriate to the category applied for, or a statement how and when a fee was paid.

The application fee will cover your subscription for the first calendar year of your membership and is not refundable.

Subscriptions fall due on the first of January each year.

Payment may be made by cheque (payable to the Australian Society of Orthodontists Inc ), Mastercard or Visa.


Membership

Membership Qualification

A person is qualified to become a member of the Society if:

  • the person is proposed as or is a member of the State Branch representing members in the location in which the person's principal practice is located or where the person is resident if not practising; and
  • the person is a member of an approved professional association for dentists, unless that person is proposed as a Retired, Corresponding or Honorary Member.

Membership Categories

Full Membership

A person may be a Full Member if that person:

  • is a Registered Orthodontist; and
  • is a Permanent Resident of Australia; and
  • has successfully completed an Approved Orthodontic Course; and
  • all applicants must produce a certificate of good standing from the Dental Board with whom the applicant is registered as a dentist or specialist.

Semi-Retired Membership

A person may be a Semi-Retired Member if that person:

  • is a Registered Orthodontist; and
  • is a Permanent Resident of Australia; and
  • has successfully completed an Approved Orthodontic Course; and
  • all applicants must produce a certificate of good standing from the Dental Board with whom the applicant is registered as a dentist or specialist; and
  • practices orthodontics for two days per week on average or its equivalent and/or is engaged in the teaching of orthodontics for a half day per week or its equivalent or less; and
  • has reached the age of 55 years or more or has been a full member for 25 years in total or more.

Overseas Membership

A person may be an Overseas Member if that person:

  • is an orthodontist, and is registered as such in the country in which their Principal Practice Location exists and
  • has successfully completed an Approved Orthodontic Course; and
  • has provided a certificate of good standing from a legal controlling body for dentists in the country of their Principal Practice Location, also indicating their status as an orthodontist; and
  • has their Principal Practice Location outside of Australia.


Student Membership

A person may be a Student Member if the person is enrolled in full time study of an Approved Orthodontic Course.

Research Student Membership

A person may be a Research Student Member if the person is enrolled in full-time study of an approved postgraduate research degree. Research Student Membership is limited to a period of 1 year.

Honorary Life Membership

A person may become an Honorary Life Member of the Society in recognition of long or outstanding service to the Society by a resolution of members.

Honorary Membership

A person may become an Honorary Member of the Society in recognition of long or outstanding service to orthodontics by a resolution of members.

Retired Membership

A Full Member can elect to become a Retired Member provided the Council is satisfied the member has permanently retired from orthodontic practice.
